How to use the Read-Aloud Order Wheel

Reading round the class in seat order lets students count ahead and rehearse only their own paragraph. Randomising keeps everyone following the text, which is the entire point of reading aloud together.

  • Tell the class in advance that you are using a wheel — the anticipation is what keeps them on the page.
  • Remove any student for whom reading aloud cold would be genuinely distressing; fairness is not the same as uniformity.
  • Elimination mode ensures everyone reads once before anyone reads twice.
