How to use the Vowel Wheel
The five written vowels for early phonics work. Worth remembering that English has far more vowel sounds than letters, so this is a spelling tool rather than a pronunciation one.
- Ask for three words containing that vowel sound, not just starting with the letter.
- Add Y as a sixth segment when teaching that it sometimes acts as a vowel.
- Pair with a consonant wheel to build nonsense words for decoding practice.
