Why a reading slump usually needs a genre, not a title

Standing in front of a to-be-read pile and feeling nothing about any of it is rarely a sign that the books themselves are bad. More often it means the wrong genre is being considered for the current mood. Spinning a genre first, then choosing a specific book within it, tends to break a reading slump faster than trying to force interest in whatever book happens to be next in a queue.

Mystery and thriller sit alongside romance and historical fiction, poetry alongside graphic novel, self-help alongside classic literature. That range matters because a reading slump is often really a mismatch between mood and genre rather than a lack of good books available. A wheel that only offered fiction genres would miss the reader whose actual block is that they need a self-help book or a biography instead.

Using it for an individual reading slump

Spin and commit to finding something in whatever genre lands, rather than re-spinning until a more comfortable answer appears. The discomfort of an unfamiliar genre is often exactly what breaks a slump. A mystery reader forced into poetry, or a fantasy reader forced into biography, sometimes finds a new favourite genre entirely from a spin they would never have chosen themselves.

Running it as a book club decision

For a group that cannot agree on what to read next, spin the genre first, then let members vote or suggest specific titles within whatever genre comes up. This two-step process, random genre followed by a group vote on the title, tends to produce far less friction than an open discussion where everyone proposes a completely different genre from the start.

Setting a one-chapter commitment rule

Agree in advance that whatever genre the wheel lands on, you will read the first chapter of something in it before deciding whether to switch. A single chapter is enough to judge whether the spin was a good match without committing to an entire book that might not work out, which keeps the exercise low-risk enough to actually follow through on.

Keeping a ready answer for every genre

Maintain a running shortlist of one or two books per genre so that whichever category the wheel lands on already has a ready answer waiting. Without this, a spin can produce a genre with no actual book attached, which just recreates the original decision paralysis one step later.
